  • [Blog] Сoronavirus impact on GPS tracking and fleet management business

You correctly right regarding delivery services are in high demand. And reason its not only Coronavirus, anyway we observe a stable growth trend e-commerce sales and urbanization. Accordingly, the demand for IT systems for managing (not only control) deliveries will grow, I mean systems likes TMS. In real practice, we already see in 90% of all requests from potential client the needs not only transport control system, but needs for transport management system and especially plan – fact analysis, i.e. the system should be have functionality for automatic and intellectually planning of work, tasks, routes, etc.. Therefore, the question - why Gurtam team, as software company, does not bring for delivery services market with own IT soft, as TMS system? it’s not a secret that the Logistics apps not enough for full-fledged TMS, and the Wialon partners (who want going with market trends) are forced to look and use third-party TMS systems. The idea that the integrator independently develops full-fledged TMS software for delivery services seems a bit utopian, in my opinion, since integrators in 99% cases not geared towards developing software and small for such business target.

IgorBoiko Well, I can only say that there are so many directions where Gurtam development may go in order to bring solutions... +)

TMS looks like a system one or two levels above GPS tracking platform. I'm not sure that company that has high competence in GPS tracking platform may create same high-quality TMS system, which especially has very high local requirements in each country. Probably in that case the GPS tracking platform will not be in a focus and Gurtam will lost its current competences.

It does not mean that Gurtam can't at some point of time start it's development, based for example on Fleetrun. But there are so many factors for this decision...

At the same time there are plenty of existing TMS systems and already proved solutions. Why not to feed them with GPS data from such systems like Wialon and flespi and use already proven solutions? Like this case with Maxoptra logistics software.

shal We do in the such way. We provide to our clients Wialon integrated with TMS Rinkai or TMS Ant Logistics and ERP and BI platform likes Qlick or Power BI.
Thats the point, that GPS tracking platform already not be in a focus as customer’s needs. Telematics market goes to data aggregation for customer business model, where the client works with all necesary data in one window - this is TMS or EPP system or BI (depending on the role employees), and the GPS tracking platform becomes as a collector of actual parameters (under the hood of customer IT ecosystems). So in the nearest future, maybe we (and other
integrators) will start provide to customers adapted TMS and ERP and BI with Flespi under the hood (only as a gateway for receiving data from sensors). In such case Wialon (including different apps) may lose a lot from current positions.

IgorBoiko Many things can happen in the future, even nobody could predict coronavirus 6 months ago.

Anyway I strongly believe that there no TMS or ERP system that can do great GPS tracking functions like control of fuel thief, geofences calculations, etc and etc whatever is GPS tracking system specialty at the moment. Together with the administration of GPS trackers installed in vehicles, which generates additional level of complexity to telematics providers.

So there will be a space for all kind of systems on the market. At least until aftermarket GPS devices will be totally replaced by builtin, supplied by manufacturer, that can be serviced on regular maintenance stations and provide all the CAN and position information via API. But we are quite far from these days at the moment. So don't worry, just do your business, do it good and you will always be on the top)

We prepared the interactive tool with daily updates about the impact of coronavirus to the transportation industry. It show how in some countries the mileage fallen from the period of lockdown. In other countries there is no impact and daily mileage growing and growing. Once virus will be eliminated all countries will have green color with higher daily mileage comparing to referenced period.

The data per each country is greatly depends by the (usually growing) number of connected vehicles to our system, but where you see hundreds of thousands or even millions of kilometers traveled per day you may be sure its quite close to general situation in countries.
